Global leader in electrification leverages its expertise to accelerate artificial intelligence development
Hitachi (TSE:6501, “Hitachi”) and Hitachi Energy, a global leader in electrification, announced on October 13, 2025, that they will provide support for the 800-volt direct current (VDC) power architecture presented by NVIDIA, developing a cleaner and more efficient way to power next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This paves the way for larger and more energy-efficient “AI factories” on a global scale.
Modern artificial intelligence (AI) applications pose challenges for data centers that exceed the capabilities of traditional power architectures designed for significantly smaller computational loads. Hitachi Energy’s advanced “grid-to-rack” architecture supports 800V DC-powered server racks and streamlines the flow of electrical power from the grid to servers. The result is a simpler, more efficient, and sustainable power system designed for modern data centers that reduces energy losses, decreases cooling requirements, and accelerates the deployment of large-scale AI facilities.
“As a company within the Hitachi Group specializing in energy solutions, Hitachi Energy brings to this collaboration over a century of experience in grid technologies and power electronics,” said Jun Taniguchi, Senior Vice President and Executive Officer, and CEO of the Social Innovation Business (SIB) at Hitachi. “Through extensive engagement in the data center sector, the expertise of specialists from across the Hitachi Group enables clean and sustainable development of the next generation of AI factories.”
Global AI data center capacity is projected to reach as much as 125 gigawatts (GW) between 2025 and 2030¹—equivalent to Spain’s total installed generation capacity². Meeting this demand requires unprecedented investment and advances in both computing and energy infrastructure.
As a global leader in transformers, high-voltage technology, digital power grids, and services, Hitachi Energy will execute the industry’s largest investment program, allocating $9 billion worldwide for expansion of manufacturing, research and development, engineering, and partnerships. This includes a historic $1 billion investment in developing production of key grid solutions in the United States. These projects will be crucial for meeting energy needs (including those of AI data centers) and supporting reliable, future-ready electrical grids.
